Aaron: "I know it's all from a point of view. An interpretation of life. How else can I also say that my life is perfect at times and mean it with every atom? I deal with the sucky times by changing my point of view, and that is a Buddhist way of doing things. And no, I won't stop calling myself a Buddhist because I follow the philosophy."
fine, be a horrible person who co-opts others' religious beliefs so she can be "exotic." You're clearly one of those thousands of American who claims to be "buddhist" or "tantric" or some other "oriental" garbage purely for the purposes of impressing people who are relatively ignorant with your knowledge of "the mysterious East" and its rich culture. It's insulting to those of us who have actually participated in that culture, and know that what you are doing is merely cheap imitation of a deep cultural tradition.
Me: Yep, that's why I do it. Not because I felt that Christianity failed me. Not because I felt empty when I went through years of depression. Not because Buddhism actually helped me dig out of a secondary depression. Not because I now feel at one with the world and with myself. Not because I finally feel at peace. No, you're right. It's because I'm completely superficial and wear beads and burn incense just to look cool. You hit it right on the dot.
Aaron: [quoted above]
Everything you've said here is only further evidence that I DID hit it right on the dot. This is a rather typical response from a new-wave, touchy-feely, co-opt Asian cultures and traditions, pseudo-buddhist. Way to play right into the stereotype.
Aaron: [states that if I retract the "life sucks" statement to a more "ACCURATE" way of putting it, he would amend his judgment. But at this point, it's too late because it would be a cop-out.]
Me: I have stated a few times now that life can be whatever you make it, but you're failing to listen. I'm not copping out. You don't know anything about me, so you can think whatever you want. It doesn't affect my life. You're no better than the religious bigots that you hate so much. You berate people that you don't know until they bow down and call you superior. You are a bully, and I'm not going to waste another moment of my life on you. If you don't change your ways, you're going to find the world to be a very lonely place.
Aaron: "You're no better than the religious bigots that you hate so much. You berate people that you don't know until they bow down and call you superior. "
No, I berate people until they RETRACT false statements and ACKNOWLEDGE true ones . . . or until they pick up their toys and go home, like you're doing.
Now, I want to work some things out.
First, with logic.
Take this as the known: Life is suffering.
Life = a.
Suffering = b.
Suffering is the experience of unpleasant events.
Suffering (b) = Unpleasant Events (c).
Most people of my generation, whilst going through unpleasant events, say that that experience "sucks." So,
Unpleasant Events (c) = Suck (d).
a=b
b=c
c=d
a=c
a=d
Ergo, life sucks.
Second, suffering being in your mind.
I understand that life can be what you make it. You can look at a thunderstorm and go, "Damn, it's raining." Or, you can go, "YAY! It's raining!" It's a state of mind.
But, suffering exists outside the mind. My grandad, in the last years of his life, went from still being physically fit and active from his days in the military service to a breathing corpse in his last days. These years were filled with suffering from colon cancer and the treatments for it. Those last years were his life at that time. And at that time, his life sucked. I want whoever disagrees with me and thinks that his suffering is purely mental to look me in the eyes and say that. I want whoever disagrees with me and thinks that his suffering was purely mental to look my grandmother in the eyes and say that. And, if at all possible, to look my grandad in the eyes and say that.
99.99999999999999999999% of all Buddhists suffer because of their mental outlook if not physical suffering. If Siddhartha Gautama himself went through what my grandad did, I don't think he'd be able to say "life rules" and not be lying to himself.
Third.
I was off by an adjective/gerund/synonym.
Fourth.
If saying that "life sucks" is a direct contradiction to the teachings of Siddhartha and makes me not a Buddhist, then I don't think there are any true [enter religion here]. There obviously have never been any Christians, because all have contradicted at least one of Jesus' teachings. A Muslim who can't make it to Mecca obviously is just a pseudo Muslim who does it to look cool. Hell, whatever religion you're doing is a cheap imitation of the true thing unless you're actually from the place it originated. (By the way, this would make the majority of Buddhists cheap imitators, since Buddhism originated in India, but very few Buddhists are there today.)
Ghost lightning.
